Conducts routine diagnostic tests and assists in the care and treatment of ophthalmology and optometry patients; reads spectacle prescriptions, orders glasses and protective mask inserts from the optical fabrication laboratory; performs minor repairs and adjustments to spectacles; teaches patients to insert, remove, and care for contact lenses; performs tonometry tests to measure the pressure within the eye; tests visual fields and locates areas with reduced vision; assists optometrist/ophthalmologist with patient medical problems such as injuries infections and diseases of the eye; administers prescribed medications in preparation for eye exams; removes dressings as needed and sterilizes surgical instruments.

Major duties. The Eye Specialist supervises or conducts routine diagnostic tests and assists in the care and treatment of ophthalmology or optometry patients. Duties for MOS 68Y at each level of skill are:
MOSC 68Y1O. Conducts routine diagnostic tests and assists in the care and treatment of ophthalmology or optometry patients under the supervision of an Ophthalmologist, Optometrist, or Ophthalmic Specialist NCO.
MOSC 68Y2O. Conducts routine diagnostic tests and assists in the care and treatment of ophthalmology or optometry patients under the supervision of an Ophthalmologist, Optometrist, or Ophthalmic Specialist NCO.
MOSC 68Y3O. Assists in the management of a small ophthalmology or optometry clinic. May serve as detachment NCO for a deployable eye team.
MOSC 68Y4O. Assists in the management of a large ophthalmology or optometry clinic.
