Expiration of Time in Service (ETS) Counseling

Purpose of Counseling:

Professional Development counseling to inform the soldier of all available opportunities within and outside of the Army due to their upcoming ETS date.

Key Points of Discussion:

CPL Smith, you are quickly approaching your ETS date of September 10, 2023 and this counseling is designed to inform you of the options provided to you by the military. Your first priority should be to ensure all of your documentation and records are up to date. We will now go over the options afforded to you if you choose to reenlist:

Option 1: Regular Army reenlistment option - Assignment to training or duty based on the needs of the Army

Option 2: Current station stabilization reenlistment option - Guarantees a 1 to 18-month period of stabilization as prescribed by line 5 below. Soldiers reenlisting for location specific selective retention bonus will be stabilized for a minimum of 24 months (12 months if reenlisting for a short tour area).

Option 3: Army training reenlistment option - Guarantees to qualified Soldiers:

a. Attendance at an available service school of choice for PMOS, skill qualification identifier, additional skill identifier, or language.

b. Airborne training for Soldiers possessing a PMOS listed in applicable RETAIN message for award of skill qualification identifier "P".

Option 4: Overseas Assignment reenlistment option - Guarantees assignment to one of the following overseas areas of choice: Korea; Pacific area, long tour; Pacific area, short tour; Alaska; Japan; Caribbean area; Europe; Germany; Italy; Hawaii; Africa; Southwest Asia. Assignment guarantee is 12 months from date of assignment, or 12 months from date of arrival of dependents, whichever occurs later.

Option 5: CONUS station-of-choice reenlistment option - This option guarantees assignment, for at least 12 months, at the CONUS station-of-choice for Soldiers reenlisting for 3, 4, 5, or 6 year periods, if qualified and authorized. This option is available to both CONUS and OCONUS Soldiers.

If you decide that none of the above options meet your personal requirements for staying in the Active Duty component of the U.S. Army you have the option of transitioning into the reserve component of the U.S. Army. The company retention NCO will coordinate transition counseling, through the Career Counselor or Battalion Retention NCO, for all Soldiers not intending to reenlist in the Active Component.

Reserve Component transition counseling session must occur no later than 180 days prior to ETS or at the beginning of transition leave IAW DA PAM 601-280. The Army Career Skills Program (CSP) affords transitioning Service Members the opportunity to participate in employment skills training (EST), on-the-job training (OJT), apprenticeships and internships with a high probability of employment in high-demand and highly-skills jobs. Participation must occur within the last 180 days of military service, with an honorable discharge. CSPs are available to all transitioning Soldiers who meet eligibility requirements, with a focus on "at-risk" Soldiers. Soldiers are considered "at-risk" if they are between the ages of 18-24, are first-term enlistees, medically separating, or involuntarily separating due to force shaping per AR 600-81.
