Enclosure 1: Narrative

(S/ACCM DARK ANVIL) During combat operations in support of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM, SPC Pacino displayed valor and courage in the rescue of a fellow Ranger from the cross fire of an enemy ambush. On the afternoon of 25 April 2004, while conducting a routine security patrol, SPC Pacino's squad came under small-arms fire in an ambush near the town of Milmonarach, Iraq. The squad immediately reacted to the attack and suppressed the enemy with heavy return fire. During the attempt of the lead fire team to move to a more defendable position, PFC Pyle was wounded and fell to the ground apparently unconscious. Without hesitation, SPC Pacino, without thought for his own safety, turned and ran back in the direction of the enemy fire to help PFC Pyle to his feet, and assisted him to a defilade position out of the enemy's direct fire. He then radioed for a medic and began rendering first-aid. He applied pressure to stop the bleeding and bandaged PFC Pyle's wounds.

(S/ACCM DARK ANVIL) After the enemy broke contact and withdrew, SPC Pacino continued to assist the wounded Ranger. When the platoon medic arrived, SPC Pacino assisted him and then helped secure the landing zone for the MEDEVAC aircraft to ensure a safe evacuation. After the MEDEVAC left, and despite the stressful encounter, he and the remaining members of his squad continued the patrol and completed the mission to secure the LOC leading into town. He and the other soldiers of his squad exhibited the noble, selfless discipline that makes the U.S. Army the best and most admired military force in the world. Upon return to the MSS, SPC Pacino went immediately to the CSH to check on the status of PFC Pyle. The loyalty and concern for his comrades displayed by SPC Pacino is what keeps our Army strong.

SPC Pacino's service in support of OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM was inspiring. His skills as a Ranger were key to the success of his fire team and squad and he displayed the skill and bravery that has come to be expected of a member of 3rd Battalion 66th Ranger Regiment during combat operations in the Iraqi Capital City.
