FOR ACTION AT FORT JACKSON SOUTH CAROLINA ON 10TH OF JANUARY 1990
THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, AUTHORIZED BY ACT OF CONGRESS, JULY 2, 1926 TAKES PLEASURE IN PRESENTING THE SOLDIERS MEDAL TO SERGEANT FIRST CLASS DAVID E. EVANS DOD#1239801761 UNITED STATES ARMY, FOR HEROISM AT RISK OF LIFE NOT INVOLING ACTUAL CONFLICT WITH AN ENEMY OF THE UNITED STATES. WHILE SERVING WITH HEADQUARTERS AND HEADQUARTERS COMPANY, TRAINING COMMAND, FORT JACKSON, SOUTH CAROLINA. ON THE 10TH OF JANUARY, 1990, WHILE ASSIGNED TO REMAGEN HAND GRENADE RANGE AS A NON-COMMISSIONED OFFICER, SERGEANT FIRST CLASS EVANS REACTED TO AN M67 FRAGMENTATION HAND GRENADE DROPPED BY A TRAINEE WHILE CONDUCTING TRAINING FOR A BASIC TRAINING UNIT. SERGEANT FIRST CLASS EVANS REACTED QUICKLY, GRABBING THE GRENADE, AND ATTEMPTING TO THROW IT DOWN RANGE. HOWEVER, THE GRENADE HIT THE INSIDE WALL OF THE BAY AND BOUNCED BACK INTO THE BAY. ONCE AGAIN, SERGEANT FIRST CLASS EVANS RESPONDED QUICKLY BY GRABBING THE TRAINEE AND EXITING THE BAY. WHEN THE GRENADE EXPLODED, BOTH SOLDIERS WERE INJURED. THE QUICK THINKING AND TOTAL DISREGARD FOR HIS SAFETY THAT SERGEANT FIRST CLASS EVANS DEMONSTRATED REFLECT GREAT CREDIT ON HIMSELF AND IS IN KEEPING WITH THE HIGHEST TRADITION OF MILITARY SERVICE.
