MOS 66R - Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP)

66R officers are advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) who specialize in behavioral health. They provide direct care to active-duty Soldiers, their families, and retirees dealing with psychiatric and emotional disorders. They are crucial for supporting the mental readiness and resiliency of the Army force.

As a 66R, you are part of the Army's Behavioral Health System of Care (BHSOC). Your job is critical to maintaining Soldier readiness and mental resilience within the Army. Army Behavioral Health is structured to provide comprehensive mental health services at all levels: garrison (base), field (operational), and deployment settings. 66Rs work primarily in outpatient behavioral health clinics at Army Medical Treatment Facilities (MTFs), Embedded Behavioral Health (EBH) teams, or multi-disciplinary health teams on posts like Fort Bragg or Camp Humphreys. 66Rs also work in Field/Operational settings: Deploy with Combat Support Hospitals (CSHs) or provide mental health support in forward-deployed locations, where you manage acute stress reactions and combat operational stress.

66Rs are often called upon to mitigate risk by identifying Soldiers at risk for suicide, violence, or other harmful behaviors. Advise commanders on fitness for duty, deployment readiness, and reintegration of Soldiers. Educate units on behavioral health awareness (e.g., stress management, substance abuse prevention). Collaborate with other Army Behavioral Health providers like 67D (Behavioral Health Officers), 73A (Social Workers), 73B (Clinical Psychologists), and enlisted behavioral health techs (68X).
